Tips on how to effectively train your dog

February 18, 2013 By Lorna Mackay

Dog training Glasgow

Canine training is a great way to have an obedient relationship with your dog. Puppy training can be tumultuous, so be prepared for some ups and downs. Arm yourself with tips from this guide and you will surely be able to train your dog the right way.

“Leave It!” should be one of the first commands that a puppy learns. This command instructs them to release an object and walk away. This simple command is beneficial in making him stop on chewing furniture inside the house.

Break complex tricks into smaller behaviours when training your dog. Let’s use training your dog to fetch the paper as an example. The first step is learning to hold something. Next, you need to teach him how to identify the object by name. Then he must be taught how to pick the item up. Finally, he should learn how to bring it over to you. When you break down the actions like this, it will be easier to communicate what you want to your dog.

You need to stay patient if you are going to be training your dog. Train them gradually so they do not feel rushed into anything. Many dogs learn quickly, but others, not so much. Patience is a virtue, and that is doubly true for training your dog.

It is very easy to teach a pooch to roll over as long as you have some tasty treats on hand. First, have the dog lay down. The next step is to hold a treat close to the floor by the dog’s head then continue to move the treat over his head until you reach the other side. He’ll follow your hand and roll over completely. When they roll over, yell “roll over.” Keep doing this until they do it just with the command. Be patient while he masters this trick. He will be a star once he does!

If you have to keep your dogs outside, never tie them up too close to one another. The chain from one dog could wrap around the second and the dogs could get hurt trying to get free. In the case that a large dog and small dog become entangled, the large dog’s rope or chain could cut off air circulation to the small dog, and it could be severely injured or die.

Do not ever scream at or strike your dog. This teaches your dog nothing and will just show him that you do not know how to train him. Firmness, positivity and consistency are the keys to solid canine training.

Be sure your dog listens well to you. The article above outlined some great tips for you to use in your training your dog techniques. Getting the desired results takes time, so be prepared for the occasional setback. To produce an obedient dog, repetition and time is essential and knowledge about effective techniques is critical.

Dog Training Tips that can save you time

February 17, 2013 By Lorna Mackay

Dog Training Glasgow

The day you bring a new puppy into your life is one that is filled with joy. That said, they can become overwhelming quickly. As you pick up after your dog, you might regret your decision to have one. However, it’s possible to feel the joy you experienced whenever you first got your dog by training your dog effectively. This article is packed with practical and proven advice for training your pet pooch.

It is important to be consistent with the command that you give your dog for each of his specific behaviors. Training sessions achieve better results when a dog is able to connect a certain word or action to a behaviour. It is important to be consistent in your training program. By doing this, you will have a higher rate of success with training your pet.

Dogs generally focus on one thing while ignoring everything around them, unless something interrupts that intense focus. Eventually, you will be able to ensure that your dog is more focused on you and your commands than other distractions.

Learn what your dog’s signals are in order to prevent future accidents indoors. Most dogs go through a serious of behaviours when they need to go to the toilet. By learning your dog’s behaviours, you can immediately take your dog to his designated area to train him where to go to the toilet. If you know what to look for when your dog has to go to the toilet you will be ready to house train them.

Puppies do not like to soil their sleeping area. If your dog uses a dog crate for sleeping /resting  you will have far greater success in house training your puppy.

Is your dog eating a nutritionally-sound diet? Like kids, dogs can get really hyperactive and unable to focus when their nutrition is not up to spec. Change your dog’s food to something healthier, and they will have mid-level energy all day. Look out for the more natural dog foods that do not use additives and colourings .

Try to limit the use of shop bought treats and offer your dog fresh fruit and vegetables instead

Dog training involves using equal amounts of patience  and love. Using the above advice will have you and your dog loving one another for many years. It takes time, but consistency and patience will see you through to a positive end.

From misbehaved to trained: Tips for training your dog

February 17, 2013 By Lorna Mackay

Dog Training

Dogs make people happy and they love unconditionally. You may have your hands full when first getting a dog. Training is a huge part of their care. If you stay consistent with these tips, your puppy/dog will quickly be trained.

It is important for your dog to get used to being away from you, especially if you have to go out to work or travel a lot Many dogs are quite happy to stay on their own for a few hours ,however they are pack animals and enjoy company so if  through necessity you must leave your dog regularly on its own for long periods it would be wise to consider using a friend or professional dog walker to exercise your dog daily .

If your dog barks constantly or destroys things while you are away, he is possibly  suffering from separation anxiety. This can be helped but you should get professional advice as soon as possible.

It is vitally important that your dog is treated in the same manner and given the same commands by every member of your family. This is the only way to ensure the training sticks. Consistency is the best method for training a dog. If more than one person is trying to train your dog, he may become confused about how to act.

Never reward bad behavior with the intent of quickly ending a certain behavior. In doing so, you are essentially telling your dog that it is able to control you, not the other way around. An example of this would be to give the dog treats every time it barks.

Use firm control to elicit desirable behaviors from your pet. You and the dog should both remain calm. Although you are certainly excited about your dog’s accomplishment, showcasing lots of excitement on your end can cause your dog to become too excited, which causes you to lose control. Maintain a calm atmosphere . Your dog mirrors your actions so you in effect are your dogs role model.

Give your dog new challenges often. Test what he knows by giving commands, even if you are sure that he has the skill mastered.

Before working with any animal behaviour specialist talk to the person and make sure that you are on the same page with the ideas and techniques that you would like to see implicated for your pet.

The behaviourist will be giving YOU the skills to train your pet as your dog has to listen to you….  at the end of the day the behaviourist goes home !

Your dog will let you know what it doesn’t want, so learn to read its signals. If your dog isn’t comfortable around new people, don’t push him. Your dog is letting you know that he is uncomfortable for good reason, and it is important to honour that. If you push your dog, it may cause biting or other undesirable behaviours to occur. Fear of  any kind  is the most common reason for a dog to show aggression.

With what you’ve learned, you are now ready to get these tips into play! Practice patience  It probably won’t happen overnight, but everything you’ve read will certainly take you closer to that point.

Obedience comes with a bit of training

February 16, 2013 By Lorna Mackay

Dog Obedience

Most agree that when a dog is well-trained, he and his owner will have a stronger bond. If your dog knows how to socialize and behave properly, spending time with him will always be pleasant and enjoyable. Keep reading to learn how you can have a great relationship with your best canine friend.

Everyone should treat your dog in the same way so as not to confuse him. Your dog needs consistent lessons everyday. If you train your dog in a certain way while another family member encourages a different behavior, your dog will not know what to do.

Never use shock collars. They do not work and should be illegal in every country!  If you start using these methods, your dog will not be responsive to anything else. If you do this your dog will respond in the wrong way.

Challenge your dog to try new things and maintain the old things. Give him a quiz where he has to perform all of his tricks, even if you know for a fact he does.

If your dog has been behaving badly for years, regardless of age they can change. If the previous owner or you have let your dog sleep on all kinds of furniture or jump up on other people for a long time your dog has certainly learnt bad habits  but when YOU learn to change the way you handle your dog  the results are amazing. No dog is too old to change.

If you are thinking about hiring a professional dog trainer,do some research and ask for referrals. Many animal behaviour specialists have opposing opinions on how to correctly train dogs. Be sure to verify that the trainer you hire has similar ideas as yours  and has many years of experience.

Dog owners are often amazed at how easy it is to train even the most problematic pet. A solid training program and a dedicated owner can achieve results quickly and with as little stress as possible. Through making behavioural changes within yourself, and applying the right techniques, your dog’s behavior will come a long way.
